Don’t worry this isn’t the finished painting. I decided to try something a little different this time. I came to the conclusion that both using oil paints and wanting to retain the white ground showing through, and getting upset because I was lacking contrast and depth was just neurotic! So I decided to forget the transparent paint and spend some time rendering back and forth.
As I started this I remembered having a dream where I was shown how to paint animals better. Great to think that the grey matter is busy while I’m asleep!
I’m not sure i this will be better or not but its worth a shot anyway. It just feels like the right thing to do. So, there is the scan I took for tonight’s work. I am happy i was able to sneak away for a few hours to paint.
Something that haunts me; I read an account a long time ago by a person who had witnessed Beugereau painting and said after he had all the colors done he would go over the whole thing with a palette knife. What was he doing? Was his paint very thick and still able to be moved around by the knife? Did he scrape off hard edges? What the heck was he doing? A mystery.
